싱가폴에 거주하는 이탈리아 식물학자 Michele Rodda가 10년 전부터 모은 싱가폴 식물원들을 담은 사진 엽서 250여 장 가운데 16장을 추려내어 만든 <Self-Portraits (at the Singapore Botanic Gardens)>.
이 엽서 묶음은 싱가폴의 아티스트이자 식물 세밀화가인 Loh Xiang Yun이 엮어낸 결과물로, 1800년대 후반에서 1920년대의 식물들의 '초상 사진'들에 주목하였다. 풍경 사진이 정원의 과거와 현재의 광경을 비교하여 보여주는 반면, 이 식물 초상 사진은 풍경과 다소 단절된 모습으로 각 식물의 표본에 집중할 수 있다.
Michele Rodda started collecting postcards of the Singapore Botanic Gardens 10 years ago, and has amassed a collection of more than 250 postcards.
Looking through Rodda’s postcard collection of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Loh was intrigued by a selection of postcards from the late 1800s to about the 1920s that were not typical photographs of iconic areas of the Gardens such as the lake or bandstand, but portraits of plants, such as palms or aroids.
While the landscape photographs allow a comparison between the past and present views of the Gardens, these plant portraits are somewhat disconnected from the landscape, shifting the attention to the individual plant specimens that may have long disappeared.
